Mitesh Patel · Oct 23, 2026 · 3 min read

Stock futures edge lower after Thursday's worst Nasdaq day since June, while oil rises again on Iran tensions. October PMIs and consumer sentiment are due before 10 a.m.

Before the Bell

S&P 500 futures are down -0.3% and Dow futures -0.65%, while Nasdaq 100 futures are only slightly lower as Nvidia and AMD edge up from Thursday's losses. Oil is the other pressure: WTI crude is up about 1.5% to $100.95 a barrel and Brent is near $110, after reports that Washington is prepared for a long confrontation with Iran. Earnings from American Express and SLB, plus survey data before 10 a.m., bring the day's first new information.

On Thursday the S&P 500 fell 1.21% to 7,663.43, its worst day since July, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 2.60% to 26,008.86, its worst since June. The Dow rose 0.02% to 52,867.98, so the damage was concentrated in large tech names. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped about 6.7%. AMD fell about 8% and Meta about 7% after raising its AI spending forecast. Overnight, Asia was mixed, with China's CSI 300 up about 1.7% and Japan's Nikkei down about 0.3%; Europe's Stoxx 600 is down about 0.4%, weighed by the same worries and by French budget turmoil.
