The S&P 500 rose 0.4% on Tuesday and ended a three-day losing streak, as buyers returned to the chip stocks that had led last week's selloff. AMD gained 3.7% ahead of its results, with Broadcom, Micron and Nvidia also higher, lifting technology 1.3% and the Nasdaq 100 0.7%. The Dow fell 0.4%, held back by Apple, which dropped 1.9% after a weak margin forecast in its Monday report. Consumer staples had their worst day of the group, down 2.1%, after Sysco fell 9.3% on a sales miss. Oil eased again on hopes for US-Iran talks, and investors waited on midterm election results due after the close.
