The headline indexes fell, but most stocks rose. Alphabet dropped 12.6% after its earnings miss as investors questioned the return on its AI spending, and software slid with it, led by ServiceNow (-27.0%) and Fortinet (-20.1%). That pulled the Nasdaq 100 down 1.4% and the S&P 500 down 0.3%, ending a three-day winning streak. Underneath, the equal-weight S&P 500, which weights every company the same, rose 1.2% and small caps gained 1.0%, as health care hit a record on Eli Lilly's 6.6% jump and the 10-year Treasury yield slipped below 5%. After the bell, Amazon and Intel both fell sharply on disappointing outlooks.
